G5 Voodoo What's New?

explode.webp

The G5 Voodoo range since the introduction of Neo introduces the new Communications Module, which brings faster USB connection speed for faster log file downloads, Ethernet, and faster Wi-Fi.

Pro and Neo also introduced new Input/Output pin types, not seen on prior Link ECU’s.

Communications

USB-C

All G5 ECU’s come with USB-C Connectivity. With Neo and Pro V2, now the ECU can be partially powered up over USB-C Power - enough to connect to PC Link, change settings, download logs, perform firmware updates etc. Not all hardware functionality will be available while on USB power, for example Analog Voltages will show 0V and output statuses will show 'Off'. When powered by USB rather than by main ECU power, the connected status in PC Link will show blue, not green.

Ethernet

The new Comms module adds Ethernet capability to Link ECU’s. Ethernet functions just like USB, and can be used to tune the car, and download logs etc. It also adds the ability to connect to the ECU over a network.

You can not do firmware updates over ethernet.

Wi-Fi

The new Comms module brings far faster speeds to Wi-Fi, allowing similar connection speed to USB.

You can not do firmware updates over Wi-Fi.

CAN

CAN 1 on the Communications Panel supplies +14V power for the CAN bus through a new Weipu connector. Rated up to 3.6A continuous. It is suitable for powering a CAN Lambda.

Pin types

The G5 Voodoo Pro V2 and Neo range introduces ADIO pins which were formerly exclusive to the Razor PDM and the new Aux/DI pins to Link ECU’s. These pins can act as either an input, or an output, greatly expanding the way you can use Link ECU’s.

ADIO

Analog-Digital-Input-Output pins can function as Auxilliary Outputs, Analogue Volt Inputs, and switched Digital Inputs.

  • When functioning as Auxiliary Outputs, ADIOs can be used as either switched (on/off) or PWM output.

  • ECU ADIOs are Low-Side output only (switching ground) and have a weak pull-up resistor.

  • When functioning as Analogue Volt Inputs, ADIOs have an analogue measurement range of 0 to +5V. Higher voltages such as VBat will not damage the ECU, but the value will not display over +5V.

  • When functioning as Digital Inputs, ECU ADIOs can only be used for switched applications (not PWM).

  • When functioning as Digital Inputs, ADIOs can use a configurable pull-up resistor to detect when a pin is grounded.

Auxiliary/Digital Input and Injection/Digital Input

Aux/DI and Inj/DI pins should be thought of as two separate pins sharing one physical pin, as such, they will appear in PC Link as just a standard Aux, Injector, or DI pin. They can only act as one pin type at a time. Like any injector pin, Inj/DI pins can be used as general output pins when not used for injection.

  • When using the DI input, they have the ability to read PWM/Frequency as well as normal switched input types. They also have a configurable pull-up to VBat..

  • Inj 9-12 on Neo 6 make use of a flywheeling diode when used as a general output

  • Aux 7-12 on Neo 4 pull-up to 8v (not VBat). Certain things that require 12v pull-up (such as some tachometers) may not be able to be driven by these pins. These pins are synchronous capable, this means they are suitable to use to drive direct injection high pressure fuel pumps. These pins are low side PWM capable.

Neo 4 has 4x Aux/DI pins

Neo 6 has 4x Inj/DI pins.

Ignition/Injection

The G5 Voodoo Pro has up to 16 injection pins and up to 12 ignition pins with that last 4 of each being shared on the same physical pin. These pins are labelled Ign 9/Inj 12 -> Ign 12/Inj 16 and can be used for either injection or ignition, not both at the same time

If the setup calls for 12 Injection pins and 12 Ignition pins (such as a V12 with sequential injection and direct spark or a 6 rotor with staged sequential injection and rotary leading direct) then those 4 shared pins will be used for Ignition. If the setup calls for 16 injection pins and 8 ignition pins (such as a V8 with Staged Sequential injection and direct spark) then those 4 shared pins will be used for injection

Voodoo Pro has 4x Inj/Ign pins.

Note: A V8 engine with Direct and Port Injection (16 injector outputs) it will also need one or more DI fuel pumps to be controlled and if those pumps are synchronous to cam position (not PWM controlled) then you will need a synchronous output per pump. If all 16 injectors are taken that leaves the only spare synchronous outputs being ignition pins, so you would need to run wasted spark instead of direct spark.

Configurable An Temp pull-ups

Neo and Pro V2 now allows the 1kΩ/10kΩ/no-pull-up configurable resister settings on all 4 An Temp pins. Previously this was only available on certain Link ECU's, and only on An Temp 1 and 2. Disabling the pull-up on an An Temp pin allows you to use it like a regular An Volt pin, or can let you choose a specific external pull-up for your desired sensor.

Mounting Options

More mounting options have been included in the design of the case of G5 Voodoo ECUs. Including:

  • 4x Through holes to suit M5

  • 4x Side mount M5 threaded holes

  • 4x Underside mount M5 Threaded holes
